After the trilogy of exhibitions about the figure of Peggy Guggenheim – which brought to Vercelli about 120.000 visitors – this one will give the chance to admire more than 40 masterpieces realized by some Italian artists, collected and beloved by the American patrons. The path will allow to perceive how Italian art was understood, over those sixty years, by critics and by American collectors and will be enriched with some important private collections, such as Gianni Mattioli’s Collection, prominent long-term loan to Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
During the year of celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification, the exhibition path symbolically starts from 1961, the year of the first centenary, with a canvas by Giuseppe Capogrossi. Through the works of some internationally renowned artists, the exhibition will retrace backwards the history of 20th century Italian art. Among the artists being exhibited: Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Giorgio Morandi, Filippo de Pisis, Arturo Tosi, Amedeo Modigliani, Arnaldo Pomodoro. A particular attention will be given to the works by Mario Sironi, one of the main artists being part of the collection: eight of his pieces will be exhibited. The last part of the exhibition is devoted to Futurism, artistic movement which immediately caught the interest of public and private American collectors: works by Medardo Rosso, Gaetano Previati and Adolfo Wildt, as well as Giacomo Balla and Umberto Boccioni
The exhibition has been realized thanks to the active participation of Giunti Arte exhibitions and museums, which is also publishing the catalogue. A rich programme of promotion, information and education activities will be carried out. Among the novelties of this year, audioguides will be freely available to visitors, that will be provided with information about the exhibition and the fresco cycle of the ancient church of Saint Marc.
This exhibition is part of the events programme of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification.
