CULTURAL EVENTS IN TURIN
The Teatro Regio will be laying on a season of Verdi, the bard of the Risorgimento and one of the architects behind the country’s cultural unification. Opening on 18 March with “I Vespri Siciliani”, the programme continues with Nabucco, Rigoletto and La Traviata.
The Teatro Stabile has a special Laboratorio Italia in store, bringing to the stage the best of today’s Italian theatre dealing with the best of Italian playwrights including Leopardi, De Filippo, Alfieri and Elsa Morante.
The second showing of the Biennale Democrazia in April is titled Tutti. Molti. Pochi. and deals with the importance to a democracy of distributing power.
From the Savoy Residences, on 25 and 26 June there will be the live broadcast worldwide at prime time of Gioachino Rossini’s La Cenerentola.
MiTo SettembreMusica involves 15 contemporary composers in a special project: each will be asked to write a piece for the Unification of Italy. Then there will be a succession of musical experiences dedicated to Italy throughout the year, with concerts to be held at the Lingotto, the Auditorium Rai, the Conservatorio and with events focused on pop, rock and electronic music at the Traffic Festival and Club to Club.
Another important moment of debate, this time on the Italian language, is the 80th International Congress of the Dante Alighieri Society, due to held from 30 September to 2 October.
During the celebrations, some of the Luci d’Artista will remain operational. Contemporary art will be found at GAM, Rivoli Castle, the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and Fondazione Merz, and will also take place in November, together with Artissima, in a special edition of ComtemporaryArt.
During the year there will also be film seasons at the National Cinema Museum, exhibitions in the city’s main museums, as well special events for the Cioccolatò fair (in April, with a preview on 17 March) and the Salone Internazionale del Libro (from 12 to 16 May). And lastly,
Turin offers routes dedicated to the Risorgimento, in the places that formed the background to the birth of Italy’s unification.
CULTURAL EVENTS IN PIEDMONT
The 100 festivals of music, theatre, cinema, dance, street art and the Piemonte dal Vivo circus, and highly appealing exhibition events will once again in 2011 be found all the way from the lakes of upper Piedmont to Cuneo and Mondovì, from the Turin valleys to Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, and then beyond the rice-fields, between Ghemme and Gattinara.
With Teatro a Corte, the most innovative theatrical companies from Europe are choosing the Savoy residences for their stage.
Against the bright background of Lake Maggiore – with its unexpectedly exotic gardens, the sacred places of meditation, the ancient historic residences – Verbania Villa Giulia hosts display events of international importance while classical music of the highest prestige is laid on by La Settimane Musicali in Stresa and Lake Maggiore.
Every year on the hills of Monferrato there is the appointment with Vignaledanza with its atmosphere of great creative vitality.
The beauty of Racconigi castle, nestling within an almost incomparable natural setting, is the ideal backdrop for the eagerly awaited artistic programme of Il Regio a Racconigi and for Vittorio Emanuele II: The Gentleman King, a display which tells of the events of a leading figure of the Risorgimento.
At Vercelli, the Arca continues its collaboration with the Fondazione Guggenheim and reopens with an exhibition connected specifically to the 150th celebrations for the Unification of Italy.
The Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto di Biella is confirmed as the ideal place for young artists to meet.
With the Palio d’Asti, a centuries old tradition is renewed, while in the scenic hillsides of the Langhe area, the irresistible attraction of the International Fair of the White Alba Truffle and Cheese in Bra has no rival.
In the year for celebrating the 150th anniversary of national unity, in all Piedmont, culture and entertainment become the lynchpin and also a pretext for learning more about the places and history of this country, along a trip of intense fascination which does not omit the main historic pageants, such as that of Novara Risorgimentale with its full calendar of events.
